The Lovettsville Water Garden This is a property that we not only constructed, but also maintain. The house was a new construction so we were given a relatively blank canvas in which to work. We built the water feature incorporating the topography of the land, and used boulders that were found on site to try to make the stream and pond look as natural as possible. There are walking paths that weave in and around the stream with a granite bridge to take you over the water. The paths take you to different seating areas and an outdoor room that is centered on a fire pit. The plantings in and around the stream and pond consist of an abundance of perennials and grasses to give it an organic, yet controlled look. One of the challenges we faced when coming up with a design for the front entry was that the circular driveway, that would generally act as a central focal point, was not centered on anything. We came up with a paver courtyard flanked by stone columns that match the house, and a seat wall to enclose the space. We wanted to create a park-like arboretum feel to the property so we brought in a wide variety of hardwood trees. We are also making an effort to re-populate the woods with oaks and maples. Along the perimeter of the woods are plenty of redbuds, dogwoods and service berries. There is a Williamsburg style vegetable garden that is fenced in to keep out the deer and other critters. The stone seat wall along the far side of the garden holds hydroponic growing boxes out of site; so all you see are fresh and healthy vegetables emerging from the planter boxes. The central well feature works as an annual display. Click here to return to the Portfolio Menu.
